Our emotions, just like our breathing, is the shortest and most effective way to become aware of what and how we are feeling. Our emotions and breathing are giving us constant feedback about our current inner state at any given time as “they always accompany us”. So, it is not only what and how we are feeling but also the intensity of that emotions; there are a wide range of emotions and different intensities, however, to simplify them we could say that there are some make us feel good and others that make us feel bad. Placing attention to HOW we are feeling is necessary in order to understand everything that is happening around us: such awareness is a real time indicator of what is going on in your inner state. Understanding the meaning behind such emotions allow us to respond intentionally rather than reacting impulsively, we are becoming proactive and not reactive.
When having a pleasant emotions flowing through us, of course, we let it run; however, it is important to detect negative emotions as soon as possible to become aware, recognise it, regain control, calm down, and shift the direction of our attention to a more pleasant outlook. Emotions serve as valuable indicators of our inner state, thus deciphering what they mean for us is powerful as they provide hidden insights to respond accordingly. For instance, shifting and placing our attention and emotions – with time and practice – into a desired situation and “getting there emotionally” helps us move forward; one way is to think of the “next logical step” from your current place, not one that is far away from where we are at the moment. In the ability to detect, understand and interpret our emotions lays the foundation for emotional regulation leading to make better decisions and well-being.
Do I often pay attention to how I feel and the underlying meaning behind the emotion?
Why is attending my emotions crucial for life?
Do I see my emotions as “teaching and serving me” to act more proactively next time?
May you become aware of your emotions and use them with purpose to serve you.
