Small in size and very hot summers in the dessert but with a powerful attitude. These challenges seemed to have made the Emirates stronger. Despite of the small size, the Emirates envisioned a great future full of splendor and greatness becoming a key reference globally. They aim excellence redefining what is possible.
Despite of their relatively small size of the Emirate, over the recent decades they have developed an admirable attitude and ambition to grow, expand and become even the best in the world in whatever they do. Emirates knew that if they envisioned a great future ahead they would need to invest in other industries to not depend solely on oil. Diversifying the economy was smart to become independent from the oil sector. Investing in other industries would boost the economy positioning the Emirates as a key international player.
It was not until the 60´s that they discovered that they had great reserves of oil, however, they knew that such an amazing asset would not be infinite for their economies. Although, it is an immense pleasure to discover great amount of oil, they soon realised that they would need to search for new sources of income to diversity their economy and not become dependent solely on oil.
Furthermore, as they became aware of the precious oil reserves they inherited they were conscious that such a fortune correlates to great responsibility to manage it. “Having no money is a problem, having a lot of money is a different problem”. They would not only have to invest it wisely to preserve it but also to make it grow. As such, they realised that diversifying their economy into different industries would be smart and that is precisely what they did. They designed a strategy, they had a plan envisioning a great future.
Since then, the approach was: receiving the oil sector to diversify into different sectors. The idea was to reduce dependence on oil and increase their income from other sectors such as tourism, real state, businesses, finance, entertainment, technology, architecture, culture, sports, art and more. This approach shifted their economy from oil dependence to multi-sector dependency. Smart change to position themselves as one of the major driving force globally.
While in the recent decades the world seemed to place attention on many driving sectors to create new sources of income for their economies, the Emirates worked to accelerate the future and make it real now. Small in size but massive in attitude, the world sees the Emirates as “a promising land”. Similar to “David and Goliath in size”, the Emirates were not afraid of not only showing their true potential but also how powerful they can become.
What we can learn from the Emirates is that what you have in mind for your future, your focus and the vision in the long term is ultimately the key to your grow and expansion. As a consequence, the rest of the world sees the Emirates with very positive eyes, even more, Emirates looks as “the place to be” from the 2000´s on.
In addition, it is an example of how to overcome obstacles regardless of the dessert, heavy long dry summer and not long ago, vast amount of land not inhabited. Perfectly aware of such disadvantages, they place their attention on finding solutions to such inconveniences. Emirates could have several reasons to complain for the circumstances they were in, however, they only focus on finding solutions to their adversities and make this a prosperous land. Undoubtedly, they changed the game around.

Similarly, in making an analogy between people and places, we find similar or shared patterns amongst the two when going through difficulties and challenges along the way. Like places and countries, a person for instance could have had a difficult past, facing a challenging present or a tough looking future, however, what the Emirates shows us is that having the right attitude helps a great deal to overcome those difficulties and become better. Regardless of the external circumstances, place your attention on finding solutions. Their lessons is “focus on the positive even when that seems impossible”.
In resume, the Emirates seems to be a good mirror in which to look at: you could have difficult external reality, nevertheless, attitude can change the whole game around. Attributes such as attitude, positive mindset and thinking big for yourself are all common elements in the Emirates landscape.
