Time and attention are amongst the two most precious resources we posses in life as they are finite. Yet, in these fast-moving modern times, it is easy to be distracted, wasting time and attention without even being conscious about it. As we live in the attention-economy everyone wants to catch yours so no wonder we find ourselves wasting our precious treasures.
In this ever-evolving and dynamic modern life, it is extremely easy to fall into the trap of unconsciously wasting time and attention on activities that offer little or no value to our personal or professional career. As we are increasingly surrounded by technology, all sorts of distractions come to us in form of text messages, emails, calls, notifications, videos, disguised as “small tasks”. The irony is that “we pay free social media” with our most precious currency we posses in life, time and attention.
Thus, all the different platforms, social media and entertainment industry “want to have our time, attention and control” to the point that when we stop for a moment we are just overwhelmed – a normal feeling in the twenty first century. Such seemingly harmless activities steal our focus, leaving us with a fragmented attention span and a nagging sense of time slipping away.
Meanwhile, as more and more people live in large metropolitan cities, the pressure of high living costs force us to live “a multitasking life”. To combat this, practice “single-tasking”, a much more powerful and productive focus. Reflect on your current life and become aware of these unconscious time and attention drains. This is why assessing how time and attention are being allocated throughout the day, recognising pattern of behaviour and acknowledging when they are being diverted towards unproductive distractions, becomes almost imperative should we seek for a more peaceful life.
If we come from the basic understanding that both time and attention are limited, we conclude that we should be more conscious on how and where we place such treasures. Each passing time is irretrievable while attention dictates where we invest our mental energy and focus. Thus, the ability to wisely allocate our time and attention becomes key in life.
By recognising the hidden time and attention wasters in our lives, we can reclaim control and invest these precious treasures in what truly matters, leading to greater productivity, fulfilment, and a greater sense of calmness amidst the modern chaos. Be aware, be awake as how and where you spend them on: deliberately choosing some time to meditate in a daily basis bring light so that we can make better decisions and take actions more aligned with who we really are.
How can I spot those time and attention wasters and break free from them?
What strategies can I develop to maintain myself focused amidst distractions?
Where shall I place my time and attention after discovering my drains?

Be aware of these time and attention traps and avoid them in the future:
Prioritize: identify tasks that truly matters and allocate time accordingly.
Delegate: should you have the option, delegate effectively.
Say no: politely decline unnecessary tasks that are not aligned with your aims.
Mindful breaks: take intentional breaks, think, imagine, ponder, reflect, have some mindful time.
Embrace leisure: play, relax, meditate. By doing so you regain mental focus and energy.
“Time you enjoying wasting, was not wasted”, wise words by John Lennon.
Balance productivity with moments of joy and relaxation.
May you find the way to a more productive, joyful and fulfilling life.
